Where can teens volunteer in Australia?

Teenagers interested in volunteering in Australia can now find an online database of volunteer opportunities on the new Volunteens website.

Volunteens was started in 2023 by Louise Campbell, a Medical Student at Bond University who is the organisation’s co-founder and president, alongside Erin McNab (currently studying a Bachelor of Advanced Finance and Economics at UQ), Will Spalding (studying Engineering at UQ), and Seb Roy-Bryant (studying Business management at UQ).

As a Brisbane-based nonprofit, Volunteens helps connect teens with opportunities to give back.

Founded and run by teens who love to volunteer, Volunteens’ website makes it easy and accessible for teens in Australia to search for the type of volunteer work that interests them in the area where they live. It does this by collaborating with numerous charities in Queensland to help them promote their volunteer events and news.

At Conservation Volunteers Australia, our goal is to empower Australians to take action for nature through volunteering. Given the alignment of our goal with that of Volunteens, we’ve partnered on this blog to help showcase what they offer and to help promote volunteering to teenagers.

Reasons for teenagers to get involved in volunteering

For example, as a conservation volunteer with Conservation Volunteers Australia, teens can learn about local wildlife, plants and ecosystems and the threats that they face. They can learn practical skills like time management, communication, team work, and how to make new friends.

There are also many health benefits associated with volunteering. This includes physical health benefits from spending time outdoors exercising, mental wellbeing benefits, and it can increase self-esteem.

One of the most popular reasons for volunteering is to be actively involved in making a difference. Another good reason is that it’s loads of fun and can be very fulfilling to be involved in doing something meaningful, such as cleaning up litter from a beach, or planting trees to restore an area that supports threatened species.

In addition to volunteering work, teens can also connect with a community of nature stewards by downloading the CVA App. We also get involved in many youth events across Australia, such as the recent Youth Ocean Carnival and Night at the Zoo event.

Introducing Volunteens: Australia’s digital teenage volunteering platform

As mentioned, Volunteens is a nonprofit organisation in Queensland, Australia, that was founded with the mission of helping teens find volunteering activities that they’re interested in.

Conservation Volunteers Australia is excited about collaborating with Volunteens and we’ve already listed our volunteering activities on their digital repository.

Find out more about Volunteens by visiting their website (https://www.volunteens.com.au) and by engaging with them on Instagram.
