Join the #SeaToSource Movement: Community Action Begins at Port Curtis

It’s no secret that plastic pollution is one of the most pressing environmental issues of our time. But in Central Queensland, a new community-led movement is taking action to make real change from the ground up.

Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA) is proud to launch the #SeaToSource Port Curtis project, a powerful initiative that brings people together to protect our local waterways and reduce plastic waste before it reaches the ocean.

We’re inviting individuals, schools, community groups, and businesses to join us in a year of meaningful action: from beach clean-ups and citizen science to hands-on workshops that help reduce plastic waste at the source.

Why Port Curtis?

Nestled in the heart of Central Queensland, the Port Curtis region includes Gladstone Harbour and the Boyne and Calliope Rivers — a stunning network of beaches, estuaries, wetlands, and coastal plains. This landscape is part of everyday life for locals, and its islands, like Curtis and Facing Island, are hubs of activity for those who love sun, surf, and sand.

But even paradise has its challenges. Walk along any beach here and you’ll likely find plastic debris washed up along the tide line or tangled in dune vegetation. These plastics can harm wildlife, damage habitats, and even make their way into our food chain.

Turning Concern Into Action

The #SeaToSource Port Curtis project is about more than just picking up litter — it’s about empowering people to understand, prevent, and reduce it.

Over the next 12 months, CVA will host a series of community clean-ups, source reduction workshops, and citizen science training sessions. Together, these activities will:

  • Remove litter from local beaches, rivers, and creeks
  • Collect valuable data for CSIRO’s National Plastic Pollution Baseline Survey
  • Help participants co-create practical source reduction plans for homes, schools, and workplaces

And for anyone across Australia who wants to get involved, you can take part in the SeaToSource Plastic Waste Challenge on the free CVA App — making it easy to take a stand against plastic pollution from wherever you are.

A Statewide Effort with Local Heart

The #SeaToSource Port Curtis project builds on the success of CVA’s previous SeaToSource initiatives across nine catchment areas nationwide. Each project connects communities to their local environment, fostering both environmental resilience and personal well-being through hands-on conservation.

This project is proudly funded through the Queensland Government’s Community Sustainability Action Grants Program, which supports local action to build a cleaner, healthier future for our oceans and communities.
