Celebrate Earth Day by Volunteering with CVA

Earth Day celebrations began in 1970, and today it’s one of the largest environmental celebrations of the year, along with World Environment Day. The theme for Earth Day in 2025 is ‘Our Power, Our Planet’, which will be celebrated around the world on Tuesday, April 22, 2025 – marking the 55th anniversary of Earth Day.

There are many ways to get involved in celebrating Earth Day. There are hundreds of Earth Day events planned around the world, and there are also many simple actions we can take daily to extend our celebrations of this day for the Earth.

Find out more about the origins of Earth Day, how conservation volunteering with Conservation Volunteers Australia is a powerful way to celebrate Earth Day, and get inspired by 4 simple ways you can make a difference for the planet.

What is Earth Day 2025 all about?

The theme for Earth Day 2025 is ‘Our Power, Our Planet’ which signifies the power we have to change the world through our support for renewable energy and a transition to clean energy. By harnessing renewables, we can build a healthier, sustainable, equitable, and prosperous future.

By using and supporting the transition to wind, solar, and other renewable technologies, we change the course of history, help mitigate climate change, and support healthy ecosystems and biodiversity. Did you know that a third of all residential homes in Australia use solar power?

There are so many different ways to get involved in making a difference on Earth Day. No act is too small. Consider that Earth Day started 55 years ago and has grown to be celebrated in 192 countries, where over one billion people are expected to participate in celebrations this year.

Get involved in Earth Day celebrations at home, at work, at school, or within your community. Earth Day is an opportunity to unite with others around a common cause: creating the future we want for people and the planet.

How Does Conservation Volunteering support Earth Day goals?

Earth Day was started in 1970 by Gaylord Nelson and Denis Hayes in response to the growing environmental movement and publication of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring, which linked pollution with impacts on health and nature.

Earth Day helped garner support from the government, business, and the public around the need to protect our environment. Over the years, it’s also helped spread environmental awareness around the globe. It’s also partnered with other organisations to help plant millions of trees, conduct beach cleanups, and share vital information with farmers about sustainable agriculture.

One of the actions you can take on Earth Day to help protect and restore our planet is to get involved in conservation volunteering with CVA. CVA offers a range of different volunteering opportunities – from beach cleanups, wetland restoration, and tree planting, to creating sanctuaries for bandicoots, building nest boxes for endangered animals, and creating Nature Blocks in gardens.

Volunteering with CVA helps support Earth Day’s goals of raising environmental awareness, protecting and restoring nature, and creating a more sustainable future for all.
