Chevron Nature in Focus Photography Competition!

Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA) and Chevron Australia are proud to announce the launch  of the Chevron Nature in Focus Photography Competition!

This competition takes over the reins of  the ‘Chevron Focus Environment Photography Competition’, which has been inspiring school-aged kids in Western Australia to celebrate their natural environment for over 18 years!

However, the Chevron Nature in Focus Photography Competition is a little different.

This competition is open to EVERYONE, with categories for both adults and juniors to show off their amazing photography skills while showcasing our country’s beautiful biodiversity.

Highlighting Australian nature, conservation efforts, and sustainability

Southwestern snake-necked turtle populations, found within wetlands across Western Australia’s southwest are facing dwindling population numbers.

Conservation Volunteers Australia is committed to ensuring  Australia’s natural wonders and unique biodiversity continues to thrive for generations to come.

We want people to understand and learn about our unique species and ecosystems – many of which are found nowhere else on Earth.

Australia has some of the world’s most unique and amazing biodiversity and environments that need to be protected.

As part of this photography competition, we want YOU to take photos of these special species and ecosystems. To show people why it’s important for us to Help Build Back Nature.

Whether it’s taking a snap of coastal mangroves at sunset, spotting a curious bandicoot in your local grasslands during a morning walk, or capturing a native lizard having a crawl in the outback desert, we want to see the vastness of Australia’s biodiversity and species.

From regional towns to bustling cities Australia has a wide range of beautiful landscapes and wonderful creatures. We also have people doing their bit for nature, practicing sustainability, and using traditional knowledge and practices. Show us through your photography why taking action for nature is so important!

Conservation Volunteers Australia supports the Global Goal for Nature and the Biodiversity Framework’s “30×30” target to help halt and reverse nature loss, by increasing the health, abundance, diversity and resilience of ecosystems.

Be part of the change!

Species and Habitats

Celebrate the remarkable diversity of life on Earth through the Species and Habitats category, which invites photographers to explore and capture the beauty, uniqueness, and importance of Australian native species and their habitats.

What We’re Looking For:

  1. Native Species: Showcase the richness of species found in different habitats, from terrestrial to aquatic environments. Highlight endangered or lesser-known species, the native species that we see every day, those thriving in their natural habitats, or those that have adapted to living in our urban environments.
  2. Habitats: Capture the essence of diverse habitats, including forests, grasslands, mountains, wetlands, oceans, urban environments, and more. Show the intricate relationships between species and their environments.
  3. Traditional Knowledge and Practices: Capture traditional knowledge and practices that contribute to the conservation and sustainable management of species and habitats. This could include traditional land management techniques that promote biodiversity, or species that have cultural uses, such as food and medicine.
  4. Conservation Challenges: Illustrate the challenges faced by species and habitats today, such as habitat loss, climate change, pollution, and human-wildlife conflict. Showcase the efforts and initiatives aimed at conservation and restoration.

The Species and Habitats category aims to highlight the beauty, diversity, and fragility of life on Earth. It encourages photographers to explore the intricate relationships between species and their habitats while recognising the activities that contribute to their conservation. Through your lens, capture the essence of these ecosystems and contribute to the efforts to highlight biodiversity conservation and sustainability.

Revive our Wetlands and build an Urban Shade Forest with CVA

Beat the heat and help cool out cities and towns by planting native trees in your community in CVA’s Urban Shade Forest initiative. We are building Urban Shade Forests in Perth and other key cities. Check out how you can help!

Our Revive Our Wetlands initiative is another project we’d love you to learn more about and support. Wetlands are a powerful ally in tackling climate change, protecting our coasts from wild weather events, and cleaning our water. Explore how you can help!

Continue your conservation journey at home

Two-thirds of Australians live in our cities and major towns. This represents a massive opportunity for us to come together as Nature Stewards to do something good for nature in our backyards, towns, and cities by building and restoring biodiversity where we live.

We can each do our bit for nature by creating habitats for our native wildlife and biodiversity by dedicating a bit of our space to planting and building Nature Blocks where we live.

A fun new way to take action for nature

Creating Nature Blocks can help build back biodiversity. As little as 1 metre x 1 metre in an unused corner of a backyard or balcony could swiftly contribute to filling critical missing links in urban biodiversity habitats.

Nature Blocks are small areas of native plants that are grown to provide critical habitats for a range of animals, thereby supporting biodiversity.

This is particularly the case for smaller “building block” species like birds, bees, butterflies, and other insects driving the rapid rise in threatened species in recent years.

One block at a time, we can all make a difference in our own backyards – and the world around us 🌏.

But we know that it’s not always easy to find time, so we’ve created a way for people to take action anywhere, anytime – and it’s as simple as downloading this free and easy-to-use app!

Anyone can take part and contribute to the conservation of biodiversity 😊.
