Celebrate Wetlands this month with CVA and Chevron Australia

Protecting and restoring wetlands is a conservation priority for Conservation Volunteers Australia. That’s why in 2022 we established the Revive Our Wetlands project to focus our efforts on restoring and protecting wetlands across Australia.

Find out more below about the importance of protecting wetlands, about the history and vision of our Revive Our Wetlands project, our extended partnership with Chevron Australia and our achievements to date.

As we gear up to celebrate World Wetlands Day 2025 on 2nd February, under the theme of ‘protecting wetlands for our common future’, we invite you to join us for celebratory events across Australia to restore and revive our Australian wetlands. Learn more about these exciting events and to attend.

Why is Wetland Conservation so Important?

Wetlands are important for a myriad of reasons. Wetlands are one of the best nature-based solutions for tackling climate change, as these habitats are able to sequester and store carbon much faster than terrestrial forests.

Although wetlands globally have been depleted and destroyed rapidly over the last few decades, it’s significant that Australia is home to around 12% of the world’s blue carbon ecosystems that support mangroves, tidal marshes and seagrasses.

Wetland habitats support biodiversity and play a significant role in disaster risk management by providing natural buffers against flooding and storms, while helping to regulate local climates and providing green spaces for communities to connect with nature.

Wetland conservation is important to safeguard freshwater resources, biodiversity, and carbon sinks and to help us mitigate the impacts of climate change. By taking action to restore and protect wetlands across Australia, we can also help to safeguard jobs and livelihoods, wellbeing, and our connection with nature.

About CVA’s Revive Our Wetlands Project

Together with our national project partner, Chevron Australia, we are proud to  implement the Revive Our Wetlands Project, which was established in 2021.

In 2024, we excitedly renewed our partnership with Chevron Australia and premium fuel brand Caltex for a further three years. With their generous support, we have been able to expand and build on our biodiversity restoration activities in 10 ecologically important wetlands across Australia.

Our conservation volunteering and habitation restoration activities (including citizen science events and Aboriginal connection to Country events) will be implemented at the following wetlands:

  • Bibra, Thompsons and Forrestdale Lakes (Western Australia)
  • Whicker Road Wetlands/Barker Inlet (South Australia)
  • Lower Barwon (Victoria)
  • Derwent Estuary (Tasmania)
  • Rockdale Wetlands (New South Wales)
  • Moreton Bay (Queensland)
  • Oaks Rd Wetlands (Queensland)
  • Saint Lawrence (Queensland)
