World Environment Day Corporate Digital Innovation challenge

Each year since 2014, we’ve run a tree planting challenge for our corporate partners on World Environment Day. Over that time, our corporate partners have planted over 50,000 trees, which is an outstanding result #ForNature. This year the tree planting challenge couldn’t go ahead due to the physical distancing measures in place in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. So we began exploring novel ways to engage with our partners and communities across Australia to deliver positive environmental and social outcomes, despite the physical distancing restrictions currently in place.

Today on World Environment Day 2020, we asked our corporate partners to stay home, stay safe and embrace a digital innovation challenge. Staking team against team, 16 teams were challenged to create the best product, concept, infrastructure design, or social change strategy to tackle one of the World’s most solvable environmental issues – plastic pollution in our waterways.

At 9am today we laid down the challenge for the teams to come up with an innovative design concept to drastically reduce the amount of plastic entering our waterways. Each team worked virtually together to come up with a design concept in one of three categories:

Reduction: Alternative materials or packaging

Capture: Civic infrastructure or product

Repurpose: Products made from plastic or novel recycling

Teams worked on their project throughout the day and had to submit their entries online by 4pm.

The Corporate Digital Innovation Challenge is the latest addition to our Revive Campaign, and demonstrates our commitment to identifying and reducing threats to sensitive aquatic and coastal environments. Plastic pollution is one of the biggest threats to these environments and we’re hoping todays challenge brings us one step closer to finding an innovative solution to the plastic pollution problem.

Stay tuned to see the results – our judging panel will spend the next few days reviewing the entries and will announce the winning team on June 9th.
