What is it?

Now in its third year, CVA’s Online Corporate Innovation Challenge pits business teams across the Asia-Pacific against each other, to develop innovative approaches to a pressing environmental & social challenge.

Part of our annual Corporate Challenge Series, this virtual innovation challenge event will take place on Friday 22nd April to celebrate Earth Day, encouraging global support for environmental protection in the UN Decade on Restoration.

This challenge aligns with these Sustainable Development Goals:

  • SDG 3 – Good Health & Wellbeing
  • SDG 15 – Life On Land and
  • SDG 17 – Partnerships For The Goals

Challenge Theme: Nature Blocks

CVA’s Nature Blocks activities help you connect with your community and with nature, right where you live.

With more than 370 threatened animal species living in Australian cities, and many of them under pressure from habitat loss, Australians can protect and restore the homes of their local wildlife.

By taking part in this Nature Blocks challenge, you can make your homes, streets, and neighbourhoods more wildlife friendly and biodiverse. Bringing back wildlife to your neighbourhood starts with establishing a nature block on your balcony, nature strip, back yard, or community garden – as little as a square metre can make a difference.

What is Expected of Participants

Each team will co-design a minimum 1 square metre “Nature Block” for their chosen location (e.g., office, community garden, balcony, nature strip). A Nature Block benefits native wildlife and biodiversity.

Using features of their designs, teams will then develop a marketing campaign to activate an identified target audience and encourage them to create their own Nature Block. This challenge is an opportunity to bring skilled individuals from across your organisation together to volunteer their time to help build our capacity to scale the Nature Blocks initiative nationally.

What Happens on the Challenge Day?

  • The challenge will be held online
  • Participants will have access to a 30-minute exclusive video package outlining the challenge, along with the judging criteria
  • Online guidance and support from our CVA Nature Blocks team will be available 9am-5pm AEST on Friday 22 April
  • Your team will have access to the challenge platform for 24-hour to complete this challenge and submit your response
  • This is a self-paced challenge, and we recommend each team allocates a 4-hour window from start to end, at a time that suits the you best
  • Output: each team will be required to submit their challenge pitch within the 24-hour window

“Whether you call it corporate social responsibility, corporate citizenship, or sustainability, taking part in initiatives that improve the world we live in is a part of being human. Atlassian was excited to support the Corporate Innovation Challenge in 2021 to contribute to solving some of humanity’s biggest problems.”

– Eve Claydon, Atlassian Content Designer and Sustainability Advocate

Judging

  • Each entry or pitch will include a summary of the design and marketing concept plus a graphic representation of their Nature Block
  • CVA will be providing detailed judging criteria as part of the challenge package on the day. An expert judging panel will review the submissions and select the winning Nature Block design by Friday 29 April 2022
  • Winning entries will be featured on CVA channels, as part of the promotion of the challenge

The winning team will receive the 2022 CVA Corporate Innovation Challenge trophy, designed by Wathaurong Glass & Arts. The winning design will be incorporated into the delivery of CVA’s national Nature Blocks project.

Why get involved?

By participating in our online Nature Blocks innovation challenge employees will enhance their team building skills, understanding of connecting communities to biodiversity and have the chance to see their winning Nature Blocks marketing concept be part of an exciting national project in the coming year.

The challenge fosters a culture of creativity and connection which breaks down silos between departments and organisations, with a flexible option for face to face or online team engagement.

You’ll be helping CVA with great ideas to make our national rollout of the Nature Blocks initiative even more effective.

What a fantastic idea for creating a fun idea rich environment to source ideas to promote citizen science. A win-win!”

– 2021 Corporate Innovation Challenge Participant
