On Monday September 10 our CEO Phil Harrison happily abandoned his desk for the day to get stuck into Bushcare’s Big Day Out activities at Nathan Road Wetlands at Rothwell, in Brisbane’s north. With a team of 8 volunteers and staff from the Brisbane office rolling up their sleeves alongside Phil, on the day 57 plants were planted, 500 watered and weeds were cleared from 500 m2 of wetland. Eastern grey kangaroos were seen in this suburban refuge, together with a wide range of native bird species including waterbirds.
Participants were enthusiastic about the positive changes the regeneration project is making, pitching in eagerly to plant Richmond Birdwing Butterfly vines to start a new habitat node to encourage the spread of this threatened butterfly species.

The activities at Nathan Road Wetlands on Monday are part on an ongoing project by CVA to improve environmental outcomes at the site through weed control and caring for previous plantings.
Nathan Road Wetlands provide crucial habitat for native plants and animals, and adjoin the Moreton Bay wetlands, which are listed as internationally significant under the Ramsar Convention. The site is home to koalas, Eastern Grey kangaroos, greater gliders, grey-headed flying foxes, wetland birds including migratory shorebirds, and native orchids.
Our Brisbane team and volunteers have been working at Nathan Road Wetlands throughout the year, in partnership the local Bushcare group and Moreton Bay Regional Council (MBRC). The site was purchased by MRBC for conservation, research, education and ecotourism, and we’re looking forward to continuing our partnership with Bushcare and MBRC to restore the Nathan Road Wetlands into the future.
Bushcare’s Big Day Out (BBDO) is an annual national day of action intended to encourage everyone to participate in caring for the environment and connect with Bushcare, Landcare and other local groups. While the official date for BBDO 2018 is Sunday September 16, there are events happening throughout September around the country. Check out the national map to find one near you.
