LitterStopping in Launnie with local legend Mark

It’s local legends like Mark from Launceston that keep our #SeaToSource project flowing. Beginning his clean-ups as a one-man army, Mark has now grown his litter-stopping group to 50 members strong. In the last 3 months alone, @Litter Free Launnie has managed to stop around 150kg of rubbish from entering the incredible Tamar River catchment.

Mark has also been a frequent user of our LitterStopper app to record his litter data and contribute to our #SeaToSource dataset. So why does Mark use Litter Stopper? “It’s very easy to use and it’s great to be able to contribute. I only record by weight but I hope to start recording a sort/audit of the rubbish soon”.

Inspired by Mark’s story? If you’re based in Launceston you can join Litter Free Launnie. If you’re further afield, we encourage you to get involved in our LitterBlitz, where you can collect litter data and have a chance to win.

What do you like about Litter Stopper or why do you use the app?

“It’s very easy to use and it’s great to be able to contribute. I only record by weight but I hope to start recording a sort/audit of the rubbish on a monthly Saturday clean-up.”

Have you found any interesting observations or findings during your clean-ups?

“No, just the usual, lots of cigarette butts, masks, food packaging and sadly lots of plastic and glass bottles that could have been easily recycled.”

What advice do you have for people who want to start their own clean-up group?

“I just decided to commit to it on a weekly basis myself and thought of anyone else who came along as a bonus.

I created a group on Facebook 3 months ago and now from about 50 members. We have about 5 – 6 people who come regularly.

So in the last 3 months, we have managed to stop around 150kg of rubbish from entering the waterways which feels pretty great.”

Tell us a bit more about your own weekly clean-up group. How can locals get involved?

“We do a weekly Monday Clean Up at revolving locations around Kanamaluka/Launceston area 3-5 pm and a Saturday Clean Up the last Saturday of the month at the same time. People come for whatever time they want and come to whichever ones they want.

The group on Facebook is called Litter Free Launnie and people can get in touch and find locations there.”
