Wait, what exactly is a LitterBlitz anyway?

You may have already heard of a BioBlitz (identifying as many species as possible in an area within a specified time), but how about a LitterBlitz?

Well, we’re calling on you to step outside between April 23rd and July 31st to blitz your local area for litter.

LitterBlitzing your local patch can be as simple as going for a walk around your neighbourhood, and picking up and identifying a few pieces of litter.

But why record and analyse our litter?

We know that ocean litter is one of the biggest threats to marine life, but we also know that cleanups alone won’t solve the problem. To tackle ocean litter in the most effective way, we need to get a better understanding of the litter in our local areas – where its located, how much is out there, and what kinds of litter are most common.

To help us achieve this, we’ve partnered with Beach Patrol, makers of the mobile app Litter Stopper, to help you record valuable information as part of your LitterBlitz sessions.

You can choose to blitz your local streets, parks, rivers or beaches – anywhere that matters to you. By telling us about the litter you’ve collected, you’re helping us to map ocean litter within our catchments and you’re directly contributing to our broader #SeaToSource project.

Show me the prizes

In addition to enjoying cleaner waterways and the satisfaction that comes from reducing threats to our incredible marine life, we’ve got some great prizes on offer.

Between April 23rd and July 31st, if you submit a Litter Stopper entry and follow the steps below, you’ll go into the draw to win 1 of 5 $100 Red Balloon e-gift vouchers.

Up to fifty lucky entrants will also receive a 6-month (3 issue) subscription to Australian Geographic magazine, courtesy of our partners at Australian Geographic.

How do I win prizes?

You can take part in LitterBlitz in 4 easy steps:

  1. Install Litter Stopper onto your mobile device.
  2. Complete a cleanup. It can be a 5-minute blitz of your local neighbourhood or even a 2 hour cleanup of a bushland area. It’s completely up to you.
  3. Using the Litter Stopper app, record data about your LitterBlitz.
  4. Submit an entry on the Litter Stopper app (don’t forget to take a photo of your litter haul).

Important: In order for us to access your litter data, you need to select “Conservation Volunteers Australia” as the registered organisation when using the Litter Stopper app.

  1. Head to our LitterBlitz competition page and fill out an entry form for each Litter Stopper entry you complete.

You can enter as many times as you like by following steps 2-4 above. The more times you enter, the more chances you’ll have to win! At the end of the competition period, our lucky winners will be selected at random and contacted via email by July 15th.

PS Always LitterBlitz Safely

There are a few things to keep in mind when LitterBlitzing, to make sure that you and your fellow Blitzers stay safe.

  • Safety first. Always wear a pair of gloves when picking up litter and don’t forget to stay sun safe.
  • LitterBlitzing is always more fun with a friend. We encourage you to head out in a pair or small group of people when cleaning up. If you feel unsafe at any point, head back to safety.
  • Conduct your cleanups on public property or gain permission from the landholder if entering onto private property.
  • If you come across hazardous items (i.e. syringes), get in touch with the relevant Council for safe disposal.
