The Understorey Network volunteers at the community nursery

Understorey Network

Conservation Volunteers Australia took over the management of The Understorey Network, in Tasmania, in October 2016. This change in management has allowed us to enrich our programs and expand on the types of experiences we can offer our volunteers.

The Understorey Network is a not-for-profit community based organisation that is of great benefit to the Tasmanian community. Conservation Volunteers Australia is glad to support the program and to see this great community initiative continue. The aim of The Understorey Network and the nursery is; promoting the protection of existing native vegetation and the use of local, native understorey plants in revegetation projects. The community nursery is capable of growing 35,000 plants as well as managing a seedbank, and has the only online plant database in Tasmania. As part of the program, we also deliver community workshops, training and seed collecting field trips.

The nursery is based in Glenorchy, just north of Hobart and has a strong base of volunteers who collect the seeds, propagate the plants and take care of them until they are ready for planting, or sale, at a weekly plant sale at the nursery. Volunteers also maintain the native gardens onsite and fire up and cook pizzas once a month. We always encourage and welcome new volunteers to join our team at the nursery. Currently, the nursery is open to volunteers once a week, with workshops and field trips offered throughout the year.

Moving forward we will be seeking further opportunities to expand the program and get more people involved, so keep an eye on our website, or follow us on Facebook to keep up to date with what’s happening.
