Certificate 1 in Active Volunteering
Conservation Volunteers is a Registered Training Organisation offering a number of training programs specific to the conservation industry.
The Certificate in Active Volunteering is a formal qualification that recognises the competencies volunteers achieve through volunteering.
Conservation Volunteers is the only organisation delivering the Certificate 1 in Active Volunteering and this is made possible through our partnership with Toyota Australia.
The partnership aims to increase the number of Australians participating in local environmental projects by making volunteering easy and accessible. It also aims to recognise the skills volunteers gain on Conservation Volunteers projects.
This certificate helps to demonstrate to educational institutions and employers the skills and experiences gained from volunteering.
Certificates 1, 2 and 3 in Active Volunteering were developed by Volunteering Australia and the National Volunteer Skills Centre with the support of the Australian Government Department of Family and Community Services.
There are six “units of competency” that make up the Certificate 1 in Active Volunteering – four are core units and two are electives.
Units of competency (core units).
- Be an effective volunteer
- Organise work
- Follow work place safety procedures
- Create client relationships
Elective Units of competency (two can be selected)
- Prepare for work
- Provide basic first aid
- Planting trees & shrubs
- Support natural area conservation
- Treat weeds
Other units may be selected depending on student skills and volunteer work accomplished
To achieve the Certificate 1 in Active Volunteering, volunteers need to:
- Volunteer for 30 hours or more on conservation projects
- Complete a log book that records the volunteer experiences and the skills learnt.
These logbooks and the related volunteer experience must be assessed by a trainer / workplace assessor under the auspices of a recognised training organisation.
