Green Gym: Natural exercise for health and wellbeing, is gearing up to launch Green Gym for Carers in Newcastle on 28th February. Weekly sessions will run throughout the year, and we are currently inviting participants to register. Supported by nib foundation, this program is specifically offered to unpaid carers in the Newcastle region.
Who are unpaid carers?
Carers Australia define Carers as people who provide unpaid care and support to family members and friends who have a disability, mental illness, chronic condition, terminal illness, an alcohol or other drug issue or who are frail aged. You may be surprised to know that many Carers do not even recognise they are in fact a Carer; caring is simply a part of life rather than being perceived as a particular role.
Why are programs being offered for unpaid Carers?
It’s rather common for Carers to put less of a priority on their own health and wellbeing than those they care for; that’s where Green Gym comes in, providing some exercise as participants actively help the environment through practical conservation tasks. As part of a group, Carers will spend time with other Carers during sessions where they can take time out for themselves in a social setting. Immersion in nature has proven benefits to mental wellbeing. This article from the ABC provides a few reasons why being in nature is good for us.
As featured in the Herald, Green Gym participant Ruth Boydell said she “actually felt a great deal of satisfaction by simply deciding to do it. It was kind of a big step for me to decide to get out of the house and do something physical. Particularly with a group of people who know what I’m going through [other Carers].”
Where is Green Gym located in Newcastle?
CVA’s Newcastle team has partnered with National Parks and Wildlife Service and selected Glenrock State Conservation Area as the location for Green Gym. Why? This beautiful natural area is located close by to urban Newcastle yet once you’re inside the forest it is easy to feel like you are somewhere remote. The forest, estuary and coastal features all have something unique to offer, and there is plenty of habitat restoration that needs to be done by eager volunteers.
If you, or someone you know fits this description of an unpaid Carer in the Newcastle region, please tell them about Green Gym and encourage them to call or email our office to learn more.
