Bushcare's Major Day Out

Bushcare’s Major Day Out Joins Conservation Volunteers

In 2009 retiree and Bushcare member Don Wilson was inspired to tackle the weeds invading local bushland in Willoughby Shire, Sydney, and recruited volunteers to join him. In the years since Don and a dedicated volunteer committee have transformed an occasional working bee into Bushcare’s Major Day Out, a national day of action to care for and improve bushland pockets in urban and regional areas. In 2016, 277 events took place for Bushcare’s Major Day Out across Australia, involving more than 1200 volunteers.

Conservation Volunteers is pleased to announce the merger of Bushcare’s Major Day Out with our organization. As a volunteer-focused non-profit organization our goals and philosophy align with those of Bushcare’s Major Day Out, and we look forward to expanding this annual event throughout Australia and New Zealand.

By combining Bushcare’s leagues of dedicated volunteers with our network of 35 offices and over 350 staff, we will mobilise communities to roll up their sleeves and take part in caring for their local, urban and regional bushlands, wetlands and parks.

Costa Georgiadis, the well-known and high energy TV personality, will continue on as the Patron of Bushcare’s Major Day Out. Costa is a strong supporter of the environment and bushcare in particular, and we are honored to have him as Patron of this event.

The next Bushcare’s Major Day Out will occur on Sunday September 17, 2017. Bushcare, Landcare and other community groups are encouraged to register to host volunteers on the day to undertake bushcare activities such as weed clearing, tree planting and environmental education activities.
