What is Green Schools Connect?
2010 is the United Nations International Year of Biodiversity. Conservation Volunteers is working with communities as they are an integral part of the world’s biodiversity; and have the power to either protect or destroy the diversity of plants, animals and organisms in our world.
Now in our sixth year the Vodafone Foundation Australia and Conservation Volunteers Australia have come together to support school communities in their effort to educate and inspire young Australians to take action for the future of their environment through our Green Schools Connect program.
Green Schools Connect is a partnership between Conservation Volunteers Australia and the Vodafone Australia Foundation to help make environment projects in schools a reality. Green Schools Connect has been helping to educate and inspire young Australians about the environment since 2005.
Green Schools Connect enables schools to get the extra hands to get the project done.
This may be creating a native bush foods garden, demonstrating to students how to monitor frog population in your school yard or cleaning up a creek line adjacent to the school. In 2010, the International Year of Biodiversity we are inviting schools to apply to increase the biodiversity in their school grounds.
In 2009 Green Schools Connect assisted more than 60 schools across Australia. Project outcomes included assisting 43 wildlife corridors and nature gardens, 14 frog ponds and wetlands, 9 indigenous bush food gardens and created 14 community gardens and learning spaces. Establishing sustainable kitchen gardens were also popular projects during the year
"One of our key focuses for the Vodafone Foundation Australia is to create unique and exciting opportunities for our people and the community to connect and make a sustainable impact on the environment. We're excited that our partnership with CVA continues in 2010, being the UN International Year of Biodiversity; and through our support will help increase awareness and participation in sustainability and environmental initiatives", said Adam Carthew, Head of the Vodafone Foundation Australia.
